II. Frequently asked questions.
1. Am I required to hold office hours?
- The usual standard is one hour for each 3 credit class.
2. What are the procedures for dealing with Rosters?
- Rosters are to be delivered to the Records Office by the deadline stated in the COCC calendar.
- Administrative withdrawals: You will receive two class rosters during the first week of a term. Please review them carefully. If a student misses ANY class session during the first week's classes without notifying you, please place an A/W next to their name and submit the roster to Student Records by the deadline listed on the roster. Options for returning the rosters by fax or email will be posted in Staff CommLines at the beginning of the first week.
- Midterm Grades and Final Grades: consult College Catalog for available grading systems. Deadlines for return will be noted on the grade rosters. Options for return to Student Records include hand-delivery by the instructor or on-line submission through the Banner system.
3. How will I be evaluated? See Policy and Procedures Manual Section HR-9-1.4. http://employees.cocc.edu/Faculty+Resources/Fac_Guides/Fac_Eval_Standards/default.aspx
- Instructors who are new to COCC administer standardized student evaluations in all classes. These are reviewed by the department chair and the Vice President for Instruction.
- Class visits and review by a peer (usually a full time member of the department who is assigned to this task by the Chair) are also a part of the evaluation process.
- After the second year, the schedule for evaluation will be determined by the Chair, with a minimum requirement that all instructors at COCC administer student evaluations at least one term annually in all sections taught, and that periodic class visits and review are needed to document satisfactory teaching, which is a requirement for advancement on the pay scale.
3. What is Banner and when will I have to use it?
- All COCC Staff and Students have access to the online services of Banner Web. Once logged in, you can view your class schedule, your class rosters and your payroll information. If you have been set up as a student, you can register and pay for classes on-line.
- To activate your account, please have your department secretary send an e-mail request to the ITS Helpdesk. Within 24 hours you will be provided with a temporary PIN number which you must use in conjunction with your COCC ID (82#) to log in.

Throughout the year, numerous training events are held, including hands-on workshops, online training modules, and drop-in working sessions. Also available are seasonal round-table discussion events and summer intensive training sessions.

6. Who Does What at COCC?
- Instructional Secretaries: Generally, the instructional or department secretaries input the schedule, create Notices of Appointment, and act as central clearing houses for information and materials among department members. Normally, faculty members create their own materials, because the secretaries have too many standing tasks to do this typing. But the department's secretary is your most immediate source of information, someone who can point you in the right direction to find out more.
- Department Chairs: The department chair hires adjunct and part-time faculty and makes staffing assignments for particular courses. The department chair is normally the "designated evaluator" for adjunct and part-time faculty in the department. And the department chair is the person to whom students and staff within the department first present any concerns about classes, instruction, behavior.
- Human Resources Office: Provides information about benefits, salary, hiring practices.
- The Instructional Deans: have oversight over assigned departments, reviewing budget, hiring, faculty evaluation procedures and documents.
- Vice President for Instruction: represents and directs the instructional departments and programs.
- President: represents and directs the College.
The Faculty Forum is the faculty's representative body and the bargaining unit for COCC faculty. Adjunct faculty pay dues at half the rate of the full-time faculty to be members of the Forum, and elections for the Executive Committee are held every spring. Although part-time, non-adjunct faculty are not members of the Faculty Forum, the Part-Time/Adjunct Representative to the Executive Committee has traditionally included and represented part-timers in consideration of faculty issues.
8. What kinds of benefits are available for Part-time and Adjunct Faculty?
Part-time and Adjunct Faculty benefit information is available from the Human Resources Benefits web page, or from the Human Resources office.
